Matty’s Minute: A DEEPcember Update
I've called Truckee my home for almost 20 years and am hard pressed to think of a storm that has rivaled the one we have experienced in the last few days. April of 2011 comes to mind where we received a freak storm of 10 feet in three days towards the tail end of our winter. This one however packed a different punch, closing highway 80 in both directions for several days and many of the other major roads around town and the resorts. Due to the road closures and heavy snow loads....staff could not come to work to operate the resorts!
We've now received over 200" of snow in December, shattering the previous 170 record of 179". This storm alone deposited 135" on Donner Summit!
For those of us like me that have had their season passes blacked out, I've found enjoyment in the simplicity of how life goes along during a storm cycle. Power failures, snow-blowing the driveway, shoveling the deck, keeping a fire going, sledding with the kids, playing with the dogs have been the norm. Rather than go against the grain and try to force normal activities like work or getting to the resorts... It's important to embrace the storm and turn to enjoying the time with your family. This is the reason why we chose live in the mountains. Lets thank Mother Nature for providing us with this much needed moisture. Be safe, go slow and go with the flow out there. More storms on the way next week!
